In February 2006 we experienced a devastating fire in the Overstrand which destroyed many hectares of Fynbos. Many animals had to flee before the smoke and flames and many were burnt to death, amongst others the tortoises.
The fire had burnt down the new Grootbos lodge and was endangering some properties on the edge of our village (de Kelders) while the smoke turned the sky into a dirty yellowy tint and was hanging over Walker bay. At that time I tried to capture the atmosphere, colours and anxiety which I felt
